The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) launched a new index to measure the well-being and progress of countries, it was announced on May 24, 2011. The index, "Your Better Life Index" (BLI), makes it possible to compare the 34 member countries of the OECD on 11 topics relating to living conditions and quality of life - housing, income, jobs, community, education, environment, governance, health, life satisfaction, safety, and work-life balance.
The index is shown as flower-shape graphs. Each petal of the flower shows a score for the respective topic, and therefore the shape of the flower differs by country. Japan gets higher than OECD average scores in areas such as education, health, and safety, while it gets lower scores in life satisfaction.
"It has extraordinary potential to help us deliver better policies for better lives," said OECD Secretary-General, Mr. José Ángel Gurría.
