The Canadian Index of Wellbeing Network (CIW Network), based at the University of Waterloo, announced the launch of the Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW) on October 20, 2011. It is described as a new, comprehensive index that can serve as an alternative to gross domestic product (GDP).
This index was designed by an interdisciplinary team of experts from inside and outside of Canada. It tracks the overall wellbeing of Canadians over 15 years from the base year of 1994 to 2008, using a total of 64 indices in eight areas: community vitality, democratic engagement, education, environment, healthy populations, leisure and culture, living standards, and time use.
