It commonly assumed that economic growth is essential for society. But now we are beginning to better understand the connections between humanity's economic activities and environmental problems like global warming. There is now growing interest in zeroing in on the issues of economic growth, measures like GDP used to measure of economic activity, and the kind of economy and society that can give people true happiness.
The crisis of climate change and the loss of biodiversity are symptoms of larger problems. On our finite planet, we have created structures that assume there will be infinite economic growth. People are now becoming aware that our appetite for economic growth is one of the root causes of many of these problems. There is also a growing awareness that many current forms of economic growth do not lead to true happiness. Some regions are now searching for paths to happiness not overly based on economic growth. Many people are attempting new lifestyles along these lines.
As long as the current structures of society and economy depend on "growth," however, some people fear that a slowdown of economic growth could lead to social instability. Thus, at present almost all governments base their national policies on "economic growth" and "GDP growth."
We are now at a point where humanity cannot avoid facing the "dilemma of economic growth." If we do not continue to pursue economic growth in our current economic and social systems, we will have instability of employment and livelihoods. On the other hand if we consider the real limits to the Earth's energy and other resources, ability to absorb carbon, and so on, we know that we cannot continue forever with economic growth. In recent years, researchers, politicians, and others are taking up these topics in a big way.
Believing that Japan also needs an organization to study these themes, find breakthroughs, and promote clear thinking both in Japan and worldwide, e's Inc. (President Junko Edahiro) (http://www.es-inc.jp/index.html), in cooperation with Japan for Sustainability (JFS) (http://www.japanfs.org/en/), has established the Institute for Studies in Happiness, Economy, and Society (ISHES).
There are many topics that national and local governments, corporations, organizations, and even we as individuals, cannot avoid any longer. For example, how can we create a truly happy society that recognizes the limits of the Earth yet does not cause social and economic instability? How can we measure true progress and happiness in society?
To face these challenges head on, the Institute for Studies in Happiness, Economy, and Society will engage in activities such as research, publishing, informing public opinion, dialogue, and networking with the world. We invite you to join us on this voyage.
